It’s been many years since Charlton Park has played a full court game. All games are played 4 vs 4 , half court but today was a little different. Through another facebook group a couple of guys from Amity Park had been mentioning they wanted to play anyone, anywhere. Our guys from Charlton Park took up the challenge and invited them to come over to in a best of three, full court game. We communicated through our basketball group on Facebook on Houston Streetball and set the date for today at 12pm. I went out and got some ice and waters so that everyone can keep hydrated in the humid weather. It was set to rain today however, I kept watching the weather every 30 minutes and at 10am decided that there would be a good window for us to have our game. I confirmed with the guys out of Amity and they came over on time to start the game.
We decided that the games would go up to 15 points, twos and ones, no deuce, and best of three. Our team from Charlton consisted of Devante Anderson, Chris Uno, Courtney Cash, Deshawn Smith, Ja’Michael Harris, Sammy Wade, Mike (Puerto Rican Don), Javon Woodard. The first game ended up in Charlton’s favor, we won 15 points to 9. At the break everyone got some refreshments from the cooler and Amity Park had two guys that showed up right on time to help out the team.
The second game, Amity Park picked up the momentum and jumped out with a quick 11 to 2 lead, I thought we were going to get smoked as our team couldn’t figure out what was happening but we rallied and were able to come close to striking distance, but that huge lead in the beginning is what killed us and Amity ending winning the game 15 to 9.
It was do or die for both teams for game 3 and nobody wanted to lose, reputation and bragging rights were on the line. It was intense, you smell the friction in the air and there was a couple of calls that were iffy on both sides of the court. It was 14 to 11 with Amity leading. We had several opportunities to nail some shots in the game but they were just not going in, and in the end one of the Amity players got open and nailed a wide open jumper from the top of the free throw line to win the game.
I want to congratulate the players out of Amity Park for coming through today and doing their thing. Nobody likes to lose but that’s just how basketball goes, somebody has to win and somebody has to take the loss (us this time). I want to also thank Kyren Peacock, Edward Larkins, and Ezra Maness for coming all the way from Tomball and played several 4on4 games afterwards, I know these boys wanted to play 5 vs 5 but we’ll definitely have them play first next time so they can represent Martin Luther King Park, hopefully they have 5 we’ll get them to play first this time around.
As for us from Charlton, we’ll be in contact with each other through out the week and try to head out to Amity on a weekend and try to win the rematch.
The park vs challenge has started and if anybody wants to challenge any park, just go into our group and let us know when and where it is going down. Until then …
