It was the anticipated final of the Thursday league at Broadway Baptist. Last season’s champion Broadway Soldiers faced a new challenger this time around against HSB The Mix, which is composed of several different guys from our Houston Streetball group.
When I got to the game, the game had already started with 2 minutes to play and my understanding is that there was another team that was disqualified for having a player who got two technical fouls and didn’t leave the game and thus the whole team got disqualified. Whatever the case, the show had to go on and the final was set between the teams.
In regular time both teams went at each other, for every shot one team made, the other team came back and tied it up and vice versa. It looked towards the end that Broadway Baptist was going to grab the win but made a crucial turn over and HSB Mix capitalized and tied the game with seconds to spare and the score at regular time was 60 to 60.
In the first overtime, game went back to back as well, all points were contested and nobody could hold the upperhand, towards the end of the first overtime HSB mix scored a bucket and got a foul call which was scored making them go up by the 3 points with 2 seconds to spare. Broadway Soldiers took out the ball at the half and with several passes found an unmarked man (Ja’Michael Harris) who nailed the three pointer tying up the game at 70 points a piece and went into the second overtime.
In the second overtime both teams were extremely careful not wanting to commit a turn over and both applied equal pressure on the the defense. It seemed as the game was destined to go into triple overtime but in one crucial play, Brick Zapata while trying to create a play forteam HSB Mix heard a team mate (Silver Diaz) yell very loudly “I’m open, pass the ball!!!” and so he passed the ball and in a crucial three point shot, nailed it to take the lead. Broadway Soldiers ran out of time and ended up losing the game by just one point. It was an exciting final to watch and the Thursday league comes to a close.
Congratulations to HSB Mix which is composed of Silver Diaz, Brick Zapata, Chuck Tyndall, Chris Uno, Ryan Cathcart, Ramiro De Leon, Adrian Valenzuela. It will be interesting to see if the team stays together and plays again to defend their title. I’ll definitely be posting information as to when the next Thursday league starts.
