Today we hit up Mary Jo Peckham Park in Katy, TX. Previously we had stopped by this location and we took over the whole park with the locals wondering were we came from. We had let them know that the next time we showed, we were bringing an even bigger crew and take over again.
We showed up about 7pm, the 1st court that we hooped the first time was slightly wet and we weren’t able to use that one and the middle court had already people in it, so we setup our table, along with the boombox, scoreboard, and the next tracker on the farthest court. A couple of guys wanted to hoop in the middle court to play different people and starting beating up on the locals as to the rest of us guys played against each other as we always do.
We had well over 25 people today from the group make the drive this evening as well as a couple of new people who were already playing at the park and were unaware that we have a group and now are part of this great movement. I felt personally tired throughout the games and couldn’t show my full potential, not sure if time is catching up with me but I still had fun.
Our park ambassador Jonathan Fernandez showed up late to the park due to personal obligations however he joined in the action and ran a couple of games in. He even earned a new nickname, “La Tortilla.” As he was hooping, he tried to rip the ball from an opponent and both were trying to pry the ball from each other, the other guy realizing he was loosing the grip all of a sudden let go causing Jonathan to fall on the dirt and causing him to roll several times until he came to a complete stop. Battered and slightly upset, Jonathan kept playing like a true champ.
At 9:30pm when everyone was pretty much finished, a guy showed up in work clothes and introduced himself to everyone and took off his jeans and work tshirt and pulled out a retro nuggets jersey of Carmelo Anthony, he had mentioned he wanted to hoop with us but got out of work late and so to make sure everyone got some games in, a final game was played.
Tonight’s stop was a definate success and we will continue next week on Saturday near Bear Creek, hopefully we can get more people and make it even fun. I want to thank everyone who took time from their evening and made the drive out there and all the people that we met. We’re over 1800+ members now and are growing on a daily basis and I have a feeling this is just the beginning. The future is bright.
