It was a tough 7 weeks at the Broadway Baptist League which is played every Thursday and tonight everyone converged for the playoffs to determine a winner. Out of the 8 teams that registered originally, two had dropped out after the first game for not paying on time which left a total of 6 teams.
The first game started at 6pm between The Squad which is a team mostly composed of players representing Ingrando Park and Generation who I only have met at the league. The game was pretty close throughout but Generation pulled out with a win.
The next game was Elim Knights against Team Hoyas. Both of these teams I have met the first time because of the league with the only exception of Mike from team Hoyas who goes by the name in facebook as “Puerto Rican Don”. Game was pretty close as well but Hoyas got the win to advance to the next stage.
My team Blazers faced off against Hoyas, we had gotten a bye since we had the best record in the league and got to rest a game. Game was pretty close through out and we slightly pulled ahead towards the later part of the game and managed to seal the victory. We would face the winner between Generation and Broadway Soldiers.
Broadway Soldiers who have used a black and purple jersey throughout the series faced off against team generation in red. Game started off a bit slow between both teams but Broadway Soldiers managed to get a runaway lead and eventually made it very difficult against Generation to catch up. The final would be between Broadway Soldiers and my team, the blazers.
The championship game came between both teams with the best record throughout the league. Game was pretty even throughout and for a small while we had a slight lead, broadway soldiers bounced back and made it a very tough game. At one point we were down by over 12 points but we rallied a nice comeback after the halfway break to tie it up. The game could of gone either way, but towards the end we made a couple of mistakes and fell into a deficit. We ended up losing by 5 points. It was of course a game that left us with a bad taste in our mouth, but putting all the negatives aside we had a good run with a group of guys that didn’t play prior in a league before together and joined last minute to fill in a spot and managed to make it all the way to the end.
Congratulations to Broadway Soldiers for winning and to Moy Cintron who helped organize the league. I also want to congratulate all the teams and players who played throughout and made this fun and exciting. I hadn’t played in a league in a good while but I’ll be looking forward to play again. This church will be having upcoming leagues for Monday and a new season on Thursday will begin sometime in a few weeks along with a couple of tournaments they plan in organizing, I will of course be sharing any information on our website and social media to spread the word around. Until then, keep calm and Houston Streetball.
