This April 23rd, Il Torneo di Primavera (Spring Tournament) took place at Charlton Park. Over 14 teams showed up to play and over 150 people were in attendance. Unlike our first tournament, where we gave away cash as a final prize, we were able to get trophies this time around so that we can use any proceeds for our summer tournament that we have planned. ZTE reached out to us and they provided some great smart phones to be given away. We also had a local Popeye’s provide some coupons for some tasty chicken and an Adidas gift card to be raffled out.
Because of all the rain that had hit Houston all week, it was really unclear if we would have a tournament after all;many parts of town flooded heavily and unfortunately a few lives were lost. Many ballers from our group were impacted by the storm and couldn’t make it. I personally checked the weather constantly to decide if the tournament needed to be cancelled but everything held clear till Saturday and we had our tournament.
The activities started at 12pm, and we had a couple of contests that we prepared for family fun day that the park was having for kids. We took two truck tires with a 20 inch diameter and put them on top of tables to serve for the skills contest along with cones that were placed to be weaved through. We had a blindfold free throw contest as well as the contested 3 point shootout. We also had a dunk exhibition by Ron Harmon to put a nice little show for everyone (footage later this week).
After the contests for the youth finished, it was time for the main tournament. We had 11 preregistered teams and we were able to sign up 3 extra ones that same day to make a total of 14 teams. The pre favorite of the tournament was our winter edition champion YFN (cash money) led by captain Blake Felder. 1 warmup game was given to all participants to loosen up any nerves and get their strategies right for the main competition. Double elimination was setup and the tournament went underway.
A new feature we used this time was the use of an electronic bracket tournament system. When we had our first tournament we were a little bit unorganized and got lost plenty of times figuring out who advanced and who had to play who. With the use of the app that we had, it was a matter of clicking a button and entering the scores in and presto.
The final came down between the teams Acres Shakers captained by Terry Turner and We Get Buckets captained by Lance Johnson. It was a tough contested game with both teams going at each other leaving nothing behind. We get buckets had an uphill battle to climb as they lost originally in the very beginning to Acres Shakers and had played two extra games in the losers bracket and that meant to win the final, they would of had to beat the undefeated team twice. In the end, there can only be one winner and Acres Shakers came out victorious. Adrian “Konfusion” Mack nailed a clutch game winning three pointer (2pter) and sealed the W, in addition he had hit a couple of other important shots in the final to grab the MVP of the finals.
The tournament was a success and we’re still not finished as we didn’t get to complete the adult blindfold free throw, skills contest, and three point contest and we will be shortly making an announcement in the next upcoming days when we can finish that. We’re already making plans on the summer tournament to be called “O torneo do verao” and hopefully we can use some of the money that we had left over to rent out a gym, preferably at the Fonde Recreation Center or other near by. I want to thank everyone that played and competed in the tournament along with their friends and family that came over to spectate. I want to thank our sponsors ZTE, Popeyes and Adidas for giving us the opportunity to give out some prizes. Be on the look out for the 2nd edition Le Tour de Houston, The Houston Streetball BBQ and other events that we have planned. If you have any tournaments or leagues that you want to share with us, let us know. Until then
