Today we landed in the heart of 2nd ward, Settegast Park. I was checking the weather hour by hour since the morning since there were warnings about the weather taking a turn for the worse and that it would rain. It was 4:00pm and I checked one last time and it said 0% chance of precipitation from 6pm to 9pm, so I posted on our facebook group that it was on, for everyone to turn up in the evening, and turn up they did, it was a full house.
As soon as I got there which was roughly about 5:50pm, people were already playing and warming up, half an hour later everyone showed, all the Settegast Ballerz and a lot of the players that have been attending the tour, the next tracker was pulled out and everyone started writing their nexts, it took literally about 10 minutes for it to be almost full.
The first game before the names on the next tracker was Ryan Cathcart, Devante Anderson, Phil Ethridge, and Chris Uno they played against a team of the local Settegast Ballers and won. The next game was Adrian Valenzuela, Za Bolden, Richard Cazares, and one other guy ….. the same team that won prior (chris, phil, ryan, devante) won…. then it was my turn to play. I was 2nd on the list and Nestor Garza showed up, I needed someone quick, sneaky, passes a lot and he was the perfect guy and he balls at Settegast often so I ended picking him, I asked him who should I pickup and he mentioned to get oldschool player Marcelo “Chelin” Garza, and our fourth was one of the ballers that came to play in the tour who plays regularly at Charlton, Lance. We ended up winning the first game and it was pretty close. We played another game and won that one. Old school player Marcelo was a force to be reckon with, he was banging some tough contested three point shots (2pointers) and getting rebounds and putting them back in. The 3rd game we started playing more smoothly and were up several points and then……..
On one particular play, Nestor went up for a rebound and got fouled pretty hard and got a nasty gash in his eye that started bleeding pretty hardcore that he had to sit out and eventually not play anymore to get stitches. We were left with three players, so I ended up choosing Chris Uno to be our fourth. We had some very close games, some very physical, I know I fell down pretty hard at one point and hit my elbow but the adrenaline kept me in the game. One game in particular with the local Settegast Ballers came down to suddendeath (deuce) although we nailed the last 2 shots and won that game. We ended up winning the rest of the games and went undefeated, the last game we even came back to the original team that played first and skunked them 7-0.
Tonight was definitely a success, and the tour keeps getting better and better. I want to thank everyone that came out there tonight and made this possible. I want to thank the Settegast Ballerz for coming out. Marcelo “Chelin” Garza, Eric Ibañez, Xavier Brown, Nestor “Fiesta” Garza, Richard Cazares, Sabas, Marco Sanchez, Yoni Ramirez, Simon Escobedo, Michael Ramirez, I may have missed a couple of names (msg me and i’ll add you)…and the rest of the Houston Streetball crew who showed. Kevin Tran (couldn’t play injured), Devante Anderson, Phil Ethridge, Chris Uno, Lance, Za “Lovingherforever” Bolden, Ryan Cathcart, Reggie and myself.
Le Tour de Houston is more than halfway finished, with three remaining spots on the list people are taking noticing and joining our group and we’re more than welcome to meet new friends, new opponents and become one big family. The next stop is next Saturday for the 7th spot, at the Blacktop in downtown Houston, hopefully the weather is nice and sunny and I expect a record showing. Until then
